Considering Betye Saars Use of Spiritualism and Ancestors

embellished digital collage, printed on canvas by E. Alana James

30cm x 30cm

Bette Saar was an artist easy for Alana to translate into her own self portrait. Starting with her previous work capturing the moment when she moved to digital expression, she posts that work on the flames that she has consistently used to express how life feels for someone driven always to move ahead. Hidden in those flames are her ancestors – specifically people who would approve of her journey through life and the hand, reminiscent of Saar, contains the iconic symbology that Alana relates to as well.
