Digital collage on canvas by E. Alana James
30cm x 30cm
Art rarely focuses on work, yet work is for most humans the place where they spend the largest amount of their time. Union work was the first of two pieces to bridge that gap, and also symbolically bring up the fact that worklife has changed a great deal across the 30 years of Alana’s career. The inner circle for union work was a photo taken in 1979 in New York City where the message on the bus highlighted the reason for the shot of the workers. Thirty three years later the shot of people in a mine environment points to the changes in gender mix, and technology experienced in most union environments.
